So you wanna stand on your hands? Let's get to it!

If you’ve ever thought or said any of this out loud, say YAAAAS!

  • I want to take my teacher up on the offer to “take a few hops to handstand” but I’m afraid to fall on my face or worse, flip over into a back bend! Heck no.
  • There’s just no way my arms are strong enough to hold me up!
  • Why won’t my feet lift more than a foot off the ground!!? How am I supposed to get my butt over my shoulders?
  • I’m kicking up okay, but I seem to always twist and cartwheel out of it - I can’t stick it!
  • I’m holding my handstand at the wall but I can’t get rid of the banana back, so i fall out as soon as my feet come off the wall. It’s frustrating!!

Wherever you are in your journey towards standing on your hands and experiencing the sense of strength and freedom in this inversion, I’ve been there, and I get it. The struggle is real!!

Even though you might work on it fairly often during class, it’s only a few minutes or even seconds a time and usually not enough to really get anywhere. You take workshops every so often but the lack of consistency makes it hard to improve significantly.

What if you had a group of people you could meet with on a regular basis to work on developing this skill? Now, you do!!

a workshop series designed to give you the tools you need to stand upside down safely.

Saturday, July 15    2:30 - 3:30 pm
SATURDAY, JULY 22   1:00 - 2:00 PM
SATURDAY, JULY 29   1:00 - 2:00 PM
SATURDAY, AUG5   1:00 - 2:00 PM

We will meet for an hour on 4 consecutive Saturday afternoons at GODA Yoga in Culver City and work on exercises and drills to build up your arm and core strength, shoulder flexibility and stability and confidence to find air time on your hands at the wall and in the middle of the room.

  • How to build strength and flexibility in the shoulders - scapular strength and mobility
  • Proper alignment for a strong handstand
  • Multiple entry points into handstand and warm-up exercises
  • Wrist stretches and strengthening exercises
  • Using the gaze to find balance
  • The importance of finger and palm engagement
  • Finding handstand with the help of a partner
  • Bail-out techniques to take away the fear of falling
  • How to re-frame your mental approach to empower yourself instead of psych yourself out!

This workshop won’t just give you the physical skills to get upside down (whether or not it happens during our 4 weeks together or later on your journey), but we’ll also work on your mental blocks to get you out of your own way. Half the battle is in the mind!

About your coach

My name is Nathania - Nat for short. I’ll be your guide on this 4 week journey. I’ve been practicing yoga daily since 2009 and am a very happy camper on this playground of llife upside down.

My journey towards those first few unassisted, middle-of-the-room real-deal handstands was a long and frustrating one. I very much let my ego get in the way of my experience and found myself impatient and frustrated with my lack of progress. Getting caught up in that frustration meant losing the total body awareness required to get anywhere close to handstand. It took 3 years from the time I decided I wanted to one day stand on my hands, to my first middle of the room handstand. Not because it physically took me that long to build the strength - but 3 years because I let my mind get in my way at every turn. First fear (what if I fall and break my neck!?), then judgment (my stupid shoulders are too tight!), then anger (I was catching it yesterday, why can’t I catch it today? I'll never get this!). The list goes on. It’s only when I got out of my head and allowed each kick and each experience to be a building block to the whole, that I finally found balance. Once I let go of attachment to the outcome, I was free to finally do it. Now one of my favorite things in the world is teaching others to play on their hands and to conquer their inner skeptic.

Set a goal this summer to dedicate some real practice time to getting upside down and watch the progress you make!

We are keeping this training small so that you get ample one-on-one help and attention - space is very limited!
